Itinerary

6 Day Cape Town Cultural Foodie Tour

Day 1

You are met at the airport and taken to the 5-star SaltyCrax Backpackers in Table View. The hostel is within walking distance from Kite Beach, transport terminals, restaurants, bars and shops. Early arrivals can spend the day either on a tour through the Cape Town city centre (optional extra) or simply relaxing on beautiful white beaches with picturesque views of Table Mountain. In the evening we will have a traditional South African meal, which gives you a chance to meet the others guests from around the world. After the good meal roll down to the local bars and pubs where you can spend the rest of the night at your leisure.

Day 2

Start the day with breakfast at Saltycrax Backpackers and then, let us show you the reasons why Cape Town has become such an amazing culinary destination! A friendly staff member will orientate you with the bus system so that you can head out to the city for your first day of touring.

Your first stop is in the city for a coffee tasting and tour of the oldest artisan coffee roasters in South Africa. From here we head to the Company’s Garden for a walk about and some local snacks, before heading off to Woodstock - a vibrant hidden gem on the outskirts of town - for a craft beer & food pairing. Now for some thing sweet, because… Why not! A tour of a chocolate factory, complete with tasting and a hot chocolate to follow. After your sweet-tooth has been satisfied we head back to the city to start our walking tour up Bree Street, Cape Town’s coolest strip, coveted by locals and tourists alike. Along the way we will sink our teeth into South Africa’s favourite snack, biltong, before heading off to the iconic and colourful district of Bo Kaap. Here you will sample the delights of the Cape’s Eastern traditions, including samoosas, koeksisters and an amazing array of spices. Finish the day off with a wonderful cheese platter accompanied with a sample of SA’s best wines whilst chatting to the cheesemaker.

In the evening, you can join the staff, guests and the locals at one of the restaurants or bars along the beachfront in Table View - all within rolling distance from the hostel where you will be staying the night.

Day 3

Start the morning with a pick up from a local guide for an elegant but relaxed tour through the Cape Winelands.

The Western Cape of South Africa is home to more than 500 wineries and today we will visit between 3 - 5 of our favorites. The Winelands offer more than just wine though and there is also beautiful scenery and interesting history to enjoy along the way.

The wine route tour is mellow and involves no exercise - other than lifting your wine glass. You'll visit any of the three regions of the Cape Winelands, either Stellenbosch, Franschhoek or Paarl. The day will be spent eating mouthwatering foods and treats and drinking some of the best bubbles and wines that South Africa has to offer. The wine farms offer a variety of white and red cultivars, as well as their own blends and styles. We allow enough time for each tasting to fully appreciate and enjoy the wine master’s art. The Cape Winelands is a haven of gracious, white-gabled farmsteads evoking a rich, elegant heritage.

You will be dropped off at your accommodation in the late afternoon/evening to enjoy the night at leisure. Wine-not continue sipping wine with other fellow travellers around the bonfire?

Day 4

Have breakfast and then get collected by your local guide who will take you on a Township tour. The wealth of culture, the historical development of our townships and the traditional history in the everyday life of our township residents is a priceless resource that has been incorporated in the local tourist product to the mutual benefit of tourists and local residents alike. Tour highlights include District six (Museum optional), Langa township (Family hostel, Shebeen, Traditional healer) Via Bonteheuwel (Coloured township), Gugulethu (Gugulethu the seven and Amy Bihl memorial) and Khayelitsha (Philani Centre, Pre-school).

After the tour, you can stay in the city to do some exploring before heading to GOLD restaurant for the evening, or you can request a drop off at the hostel and make your own way back to the city in the evening.

Day 5

The Bo-Kaap district is the today’s stop, renowned for its brightly coloured houses and the scent of delectable spices wafting through the air. This area of Cape Town is home to many Cape Malay people. They are known for their vibrant culture that derives from their South East Asia heritage. This is the perfect area to pick up some local spices as you roam the vibrant streets of the Bo-Kaap with picturesque Table Mountain as your backdrop. Meet Gamidah, a local South African who will welcome you into her home with open arms. You will prepare and indulge in a variety of traditional Cape Malay dishes - her love for food and people will encapsulate you as she talks you through the different food items and recipes. After all the eating you will arrive back at the backpackers where you can share your stories from the past few days over a drink with the other guests. If you want to, venture off to explore Table Views nightlife.
